Welcome the open eZ Publish community repository
March 11th, 2009
Thomas Koch, from the Swiss eZ Systems partner YMC, announces today the launch of an open Git repository for eZ Publish. Aim of this repository is to gather valuable patches from eZ Publish partners and other open source developers from the eZ Publish community, either providing fixes for existing issues or implementing new features. An issue tracker hase been set up to coördinate the efforts done.
I welcome this initiative, as it will allow things to get fixed or implemented much sooner than they are now. Hopefully eZ Systems will be so smart to embrace again what has made eZ Publish big: the eZ Publish open source community and their enthusiasm to report issues, provide patches for them and sharing their ideas.
Currently eZ Systems lacks tools and good processes to communicate properly with their ecosystem. Some examples that come straight up in my mind now are
- the ever changing and unclear roadmap, 17th of march there should be the release of 4.1, until today though no release candidate has been released, Project V is even not mentioned on it
- the issue tracker: no automatic integration of Subversion commit messages, no way to reopen an issue if has been closed but you noticed the fix was not right or incomplete, no way to review patches
- announcements about development and so on are almost exclusively made at partner and developer days
If eZ Systems does not manage to streamline everything and consolidate the efforts done by the community, I believe the open eZ Publish community repository might eventually lead to a fork.
Time will tell…

One slight correction, if you allow: forking is a concept from the middle ages (CVS, SVN), where you could not have separate developing branches and merge them back without sweet, blood and tears.
On the other hand we have seen on the conference, that there already are many “forks” of eZ Publish, since most eZ Partners modify the upstream code in one way or the other. It’s a great thing of eZ Publish, that it’s actually so modular, that you can easily adapt it to your needs.
Looking forward to use real tools! Get GIT!
