Stripping down eZ publish to save webspace

January 21st, 2006

As I don’t want to spend too much money on my webhosting, I only payed for 50 MB of webspace. A full distribution of eZ publish 3.7.3 takes 40 MB. So only 10 MB would be left for custom designs, file uploads etc. And I haven’t mentioned yet that also the size of my MySQL database is taken into account…

I did some investigation (you can do this yourself with du or WinDirStat) to see which parts of the eZ publish distribution require much disk space, and I came to a terrific conclusion: the share/translations directory takes up 22 MB! You can safely remove all unneeded translations, and what remains is an eZ publish distribution with only half the size of the original one.

Yes, share/translations takes a lot of space. I remember that once I reduced eZ publish size to less then 14 MB ( it was around version 3.3 ). You can remove unneeded files from share/translations but also you can remove:
    - doc
    - update
    - support
    - design/base (if you will not use it)
    - packages (if you installed packages, and you are sure that you will not use other, you can remove them)
    - lib (here you can remove for example PDF if you will not use it, fonts takes some space ;)
