eZ publish on Combell webhosting

January 21st, 2006

Yesterday I installed eZ publish on my Combell webhosting. After uploading and unpacking eZ 3.6.5 I tried to start the setup wizard.

I was surprised that the setup wizard didn’t want to start because of the unsupported PHP version 4.4.1. PHP 4.4? I thought it was PHP 4.3 that had been installed on my webhosting. phpinfo() gave me certainty. I’ve mailed the Combell support team to tell them I was happy with the upgrade to PHP 4.4, but I also mentioned to be disappointed because they didn’t warn their customers about the upgrade. I already got a reply and it seems they are busy with setting up such a notification system.

I gave it another try with eZ 3.7.3. Everything went fine now when starting the setup wizard, except for some PHP notices as described in the invalid bug 7313: Reference issues in 3.7.0. Again, phpinfo() gave me certainty. An older version of Zend Optimizer was enabled. I found a workaround for this problem in the Gallery2 Codex. I do have access to php.ini – lucky bastard I am – so I could use this workaround and change the value of the zend_optimizer.optimization_level directive to 14.

No further problems encountered so far. Will be continued…

This is a bug in the Zend Optimizer then…. (like so much other weird behavior :) . If you don’t need it (for encoded content), you should consider turning it off.

eZ publish seems to be faster with Zend Optimizer enabled, that’s why I don’t like to turn it off. Did you encounter other weird behavior when using eZ 3.7.3 with Zend Optimizer 2.5 enabled?

Combell probably will upgrade to version 2.6 of Zend Optimizer, which should fix some problems with PHP 4.4.x.

I’m not sure about Linux environment, but yes on Windows platform Zend Optimizer can reduce eZ publish performance. Especially TPL compilation. I suggest to keep it disabled.

It’s also proprietary closed source software. Instead ot the ZO I would definitely install APC (http://pecl.php.net/apc).

    Thanks for your advice, guys!

Sometimes I get an empty page back when editing content and I noticed segmentation faults in the Apache error log, so I finally decided to turn Zend Optimizer off. Works better now, only a bit slower. But I can live with that :-)
