Impressions from the Christmas shows of the brothers Cavanagh

December 31st, 2005

Thursday’s semi-acoustic concert of Danny and Vincent Cavanagh at the Negasonic Music Club wasn’t bad, but it could have been better. Danny definitely wasn’t in the mood, Vincent tried to brighten him up with some jokes but that didn’t work on the long term. There were some technical problems (feedback), and the crowd was not always quiet during the songs. At one moment this resulted in Danny staring angry at the audience and shouting “Shut up!”. Maybe this was not a very good reaction for an artist, but I can understand him.

I don’t exactly remember the playlist, but here are some songs they’ve played. The songs without an artist in front are from Anathema:

  • Fragile Dreams
  • Forgotten Hopes
  • Destiny is Dead
  • Pressure
  • Leave no Trace
  • The Beatles: Eleanor Rigby
  • Angelica
  • Shroud of False
  • Lost Control
  • Inner Silence
  • One Last Goodbye

Danny did these songs alone:

  • Fleetwood Mac: Big Love
  • Radiohead: Exit Music (For a Film)
  • Electricity

And they ended together:

  • Nick Drake: Cello Song (Danny still at the vocals)
  • Temporary Peace
  • Flying

Yesterday’s show at De Witte Non was the best of the three, according to Danny himself. He was in the mood this time, although he had to ask a few times to be quiet while they were playing. He admitted he sometimes seems to behave as a jerk, but the people have to get to know him better.

My girlfriend could catch the playlist, so here it is:

  1. Fragile Dreams
  2. Forgotten Hopes
  3. Angelica
  4. Pressure
  5. Leave no Trace
  6. Are You There?
  7. Shroud of False
  8. Lost Control
  9. Inner Silence
  10. One Last Goodbye
  11. Hope
  12. Temporary Peace
  13. Flying

Danny’s set:

  1. Fleetwood Mac: Big Love
  2. Antimatter: Legions
  3. Leafblade: Winter Cottage

Back together:

  1. Nick Drake: Cello Song (Danny still at the vocals, and he dedicated this to John Smith)
  2. The Beatles: Eleanor Rigby
  3. Nirvana: Something in the Way
  4. Pink Floyd: Wish You were Here

After Danny’s set, Vincent did some improvising between two songs and the result was a little song with the text “Mijn poep doet pijn” (Dutch for: “Pain in the ass”) :-D After the last song, some people requested Sleepless, and Vincent played a little part to show that it sounds awful on an acoustic guitar.

Satisfied, we ‘ve returned to home through the cold snowy night.
